Hands closing a leather roll beside the fire

Made properly.

It's sorted.

Before the fire is lit.
Before the first ticket.
Before anyone needs to ask.

The line beneath the logo

┐.

There is a part of the evening nobody photographs.

The guests have not arrived yet.

Outside, the air is beginning to cool. A bag of charcoal has been folded closed against the wall. The first pieces are catching underneath, making that faint dry crackle before there is enough heat to call it a fire.

On the table, the knife is already there.

Tongs beside it.

A cloth folded once.

Nothing remarkable.

Inside a kitchen, somewhere else, another room is at almost exactly the same point.

The extraction is running.

Steel catches the overhead light.

A knife roll lies open on the counter. Someone presses a thumb against the edge of a blade, wipes it once, and returns it to its place.

Soon there will be people.

Orders.

Questions.

Smoke.

Glasses needing filling.

Someone looking for something.

But not yet.

For a few minutes, everything is exactly where it should be.

That is where It's sorted. begins.

Not in the event.

Just before it.

The Mark

A right angle.

A full stop.

There are marks made to be noticed.

This one is made to be found.

The angle is square.

The point closes it.

Nothing more was needed.

Late afternoon. The drinks are cold but unopened. A fire is still mostly smoke and patience.

Full-grain leather, stitching and brass details

Full-grain leather.

The first mark is noticeable. The hundredth becomes the piece.

Brass hardware.

Bright when it arrives. Darker where fingers keep finding it.

Debossed.

Heat. Pressure. The mark pushed into the leather rather than laid on top of it.

Made for handling.

Smoke. Oil. Ash. Steam. Travel. Work.

Later, someone will ask where the opener is.

A hand reaches without looking.

It's there.
